There are a number of different type of locations you can fish in the Mullingar area.The below guide information covers the River Inny and Brosna systems, which consist of lakes and rivers, many renowned for coarse and pike fishing. Ballinafid Lake and other fisheries such as Lough Derravaragh in the system produce specimen fish. A few fisheries are wheelchair friendly i.e. Slevin's Lake and the Royal Canal is suitable with easy bank access.
It also covers two gem's of lakes in the Irish midlands. Both Lough Ennell and Lough Owel are second to none when its comes to pike and trout fishing. With Lough Ennell still holding the Irish record for a Brown Trout at a wapping 26lb 2oz.
Lough Ennell (Irish: Loch Ainninn) is situated beside the N52 road, off the Mullingar/Kilbeggan road.[1] It is approximately 4.5 mi (7.2 km) long by 2 mi (3.2 km) wide, with an area of about 3,540 acres (14.3 km2). It has a huge area of shallow water with nearly two-thirds of its area being less than 25 feet (8 m) and almost half of it being under 10 ft (3.0 m) deep. Read more
Lough Owel (Irish: Loch Úll) is a mesotrophic lough situated north of Mullingar. It has a maximum depth of 22m.[1] Water from Lough Owel feeds the Royal Canal. Access to the lake can be gained from a carpark and pier to the south of the N4 Mullingar to Longford route. Read more
Lough Derravaragh sits on the River Inny which flows from Lough Sheelin on its way to the River Shannon. Shaped somewhat like Italy, it is a popular lake for angling and other watersports. The main public area is at Donore near Multyfarnham, where there is a caravan park and shop restaurant which open's in the summer time. Read more
This Fishery is located a few kilometres to the south east of Multyfarnham village. It is a typical Tench fishery with a muddy bottom and marginal vegetation. Read more
Slevin's lake is approximately 40 acres in area, located very close to Mullingar town. Species include Bream and Pike predominantly. Other species present are Rudd, Roach, Perch and Hybrids and Tench. Read more
Ballinafid Lake is located North of Mullingar - to the North east of Lough Owel on the Longford Road N4. This is a small lake of about 6 acres and is regarded as a good Bream and Carp fishery. Read more
The River Inny is over 50 km in length where you can expect very good fishing for Roach, Bream and Pike The section described here is from upstream of Lough Derravaragh into Lough Iron and finally into Lough Ree. There are coarse fish in all sections of the Canal. The most predominant species are Tench of 3lbs to 4lbs with the occasional larger fish present. There are also Bream, Perch and Pike. Noted areas around Mullingar are Kilpatrick's Bridge, Ballinea Bridge, the Harbour at Pipers Boreen. Read more
